Something is breathing anyway

What do I know to be true right now?

Does anyone know? I see the world around me, if I listen I hear noises, I smell scents. On top of that I can feel things with my fingers and even my feet or my whole body.

And at the same time, whether I want it or not, thoughts appear; they just come bursting in like clouds on a sunny day.

I have no way of knowing if any of these sensations are real, or if any of my thoughts reflect what reality truly is.

But it doesn’t matter. Because the more I question what reality is, the more I question everything that matters to me.

I can be in the sun and feel its warmth, I can feel the refreshing water of the lake and the sweetness of an ice cream, and all of that can make me feel alive without my knowing how any of it works.

Even with the understanding that none of this is my responsibility. I don’t choose to taste anything in particular, I don’t choose to feel any temperature, and I don’t even choose to breathe air. Or have you ever wondered how long can you truly hold your breath for, after all?

It’s the same with my thoughts.

I don’t choose my thoughts either.

So what do I know to be true right now? Not much.

But something is breathing anyway.
