Who are you as a leader?

“Who am I supposed to be as a leader?”

This question, posed by a client a few months ago, resonated deeply with me. It’s a question that many aspiring and experienced leaders grapple with, a question that often leads to self-doubt, comparison, and a relentless pursuit of an elusive ideal.

Leadership is often portrayed as a set of specific traits or behaviours, it’s easy to feel lost in a sea of expectations. We’re bombarded with images of charismatic CEOs, visionary entrepreneurs, and transformative leaders who seem to effortlessly navigate the complexities of their roles. It’s tempting to compare ourselves to these figures, to question our own leadership style, and to believe that we need to fundamentally change who we are to be successful.

But what if the true path to effective leadership lies not in conforming to external expectations, but in embracing our authentic selves? What if the most impactful leaders are those who have the courage to lead from a place of genuine self-expression, rather than trying to fit into a pre-defined mould?

The Comparison Trap

In the age of social media and constant connectivity, it’s easier than ever to fall into the comparison trap. We scroll through our feeds, bombarded with images of seemingly perfect lives and successful careers. We compare our own leadership journeys to those of others, often feeling inadequate or questioning our choices.

This comparison can be particularly insidious in the realm of leadership. We might compare our communication style to that of a charismatic speaker, our decision-making process to that of a decisive CEO, or our vision to that of a renowned innovator. This constant comparison can lead to self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and a sense that we’re not “enough” as leaders.

However, the truth is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership. Each individual brings their own unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives to the table. Trying to emulate someone else’s leadership style can be counterproductive, leading to inauthenticity and a disconnect from our true selves.

The Power of Authenticity

Authenticity, in the context of leadership, is about being true to yourself, your values, and your unique way of leading. It’s about having the courage to express your genuine self, even when it differs from the perceived norm.

Authentic leaders are not afraid to show vulnerability, to admit their mistakes, and to learn from their experiences. They lead with integrity, transparency, and a genuine desire to serve others. They inspire trust and loyalty in their teams by being true to themselves and their values.

Authenticity is not about perfection. It’s about embracing your strengths and weaknesses, your passions and fears, and using them to create a leadership style that is uniquely yours.

Honing Your Skills, Embracing Your Uniqueness

While authenticity is essential, it doesn’t mean that we should shy away from growth and development. As leaders, we can continuously learn, adapt, and refine our skills. We can seek feedback, engage in self-reflection, and participate in training programmes to enhance our leadership capabilities.

However, this growth should be in service of our authentic selves, not in an attempt to become someone we’re not. It’s about honing our natural strengths, developing our unique talents, and finding ways to express our leadership in a way that feels true to who we are.

Leadership as a Tapestry

Imagine leadership as a tapestry woven from the threads of countless individuals. Each leader contributes their own unique colours, textures, and patterns to the overall design. Some threads might be bold and vibrant, while others are subtle and intricate. But each thread is essential to the beauty and complexity of the tapestry.

Similarly, the world of leadership is enriched by the diversity of individual styles and approaches. There is no single “right” way to lead. The most effective leaders are those who embrace their individuality, leverage their strengths, and contribute their unique gifts to the world.

Embracing Your Authentic Leadership

So, how can you embrace your authentic leadership?

  • Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your values, strengths, and passions. What makes you unique as a leader? What are your core beliefs about leadership?
  • Seek Feedback: Ask for feedback from trusted colleagues, mentors, and team members. What do they see as your strengths? What areas could you develop further?
  • Embrace Vulnerability: Don’t be afraid to show your authentic self, even when it means admitting your vulnerabilities or making mistakes.
  • Lead with Integrity: Act in alignment with your values and principles. Be transparent and honest in your communication.
  • Focus on Service: Approach leadership as a service to others, prioritizing the needs of your team and the greater good.

By embracing your authenticity, you can unlock your full leadership potential and create a positive impact on the world around you. Remember, the most effective leaders are not those who try to fit into a mould, but those who have the courage to be themselves.

.. be you, stand up for what you believe in, don’t compare yourself.
