What’s your jam tomorrow?

“Jam tomorrow and jam yesterday – but never jam today.”

This quote from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” perfectly captures a common human experience: the tendency to postpone happiness and fulfillment in anticipation of a future that may never arrive. We get caught up in the “jam tomorrow” mentality, hoping for a better future, a more successful career, a more balanced life, but often failing to take the necessary steps to create that reality today.

In the workplace, this “jam tomorrow” mentality can manifest in various ways:

  • The promise of a better work-life balance: We tell ourselves that things will get better “next quarter” or “after this project is finished,” but the reality is that the demands of work often continue to escalate.
  • The hope for a promotion or raise: We work tirelessly, hoping for recognition and reward, but sometimes those promotions or raises never materialize, leaving us feeling undervalued and demotivated.
  • The dream of a more fulfilling career: We yearn for work that is meaningful and aligned with our values, but we hesitate to make the necessary changes, fearing the unknown or the potential risks.

This constant cycle of hope and disappointment can be incredibly debilitating. It can lead to feelings of frustration, resentment, and a sense of being stuck. We become trapped in a waiting game, hoping for external circumstances to change, rather than taking ownership of our own lives and creating the changes we desire.

The Power of Taking Control

In my work with coaching clients, I often see a profound shift occur when they realize that they have the power to create their own “jam today.” It’s the moment when they recognize that they are not victims of circumstance, but rather agents of their own lives. They have the power to make choices, to set boundaries, to pursue their goals, and to create the reality they desire.

This realization can be incredibly liberating. It can lead to a renewed sense of purpose, motivation, and confidence. It can empower individuals to take action, to step outside their comfort zones, and to create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Breaking Free from the “Jam Tomorrow” Trap

So, how do we break free from the “jam tomorrow” trap? Here are a few key steps:

  1. Acknowledge Your “Jam Tomorrow”: Identify the areas of your life where you’re postponing happiness or fulfillment. What are you hoping for in the future that you could potentially create today?
  2. Take Ownership: Recognize that you have the power to create change in your life. You are not a victim of circumstance; you are the author of your own story.
  3. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve and create a plan for getting there. Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps.
  4. Take Action: Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect conditions. Start taking action today, even if it’s just a small step.
  5. Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A coach, mentor, or trusted friend can provide guidance, support, and accountability as you work towards your goals.
