What do you say no to

It’s really one of my favourite questions during coaching sessions. I believe I read it in a book by Michael Bungay Stanier, and it is: “when you say yes to this, what do you say no to?”

My clients often look a bit puzzled when I ask this. It’s in fact a simple question but a very good one to reflect and create awareness.

For example, if you say yes to a new job, what do you say no to? No to projects you liked, no to comfort, maybe no to more time with family?

It can be very powerful to understand what is on the other side of saying yes.

Saying yes to a new opportunity often means saying no to the familiar and the comfortable. It may mean saying no to stability, routine, and the known path. However, it can also mean saying yes to growth, learning, and new experiences. Ultimately, saying yes to something means saying no to the status quo and being open to the possibilities that lie ahead.

When we say yes to a new job, for example, we might have to say no to the projects we enjoyed working on in our previous role. We might have to say no to the comfort and familiarity of our old routine. We might even have to say no to spending as much time with our family as we would like. However, by saying yes to this new opportunity, we are opening ourselves up to the potential for personal and professional growth.

Similarly, saying yes to a new project or challenge at work might mean saying no to some of our free time and leisure activities. It might mean saying no to the ease and predictability of our current workload. Yet, it can also mean saying yes to expanding our skills, making valuable connections, and achieving greater success in our careers.

It’s important to recognise that every time we say yes to something, we are also saying no to something else. This awareness can help us make more intentional choices. And prioritise what truly matters to us. So, the next time you are faced with a decision, ask yourself, “When I say yes to this, what do I say no to?”. Reflecting on this question can provide valuable insights. And guide you towards making choices that align with your values and goals.
