What are you saying no to?

A few more hours, a night. And it’s Monday again. This is a chance to make adjustments to your leadership style and to your wellbeing.

Saying no is a sign of a strong and effective leader. It means knowing your priorities and focusing on what truly matters. Saying yes to everything leads to work overload and frustration.

But why do we say yes so easily?

Perhaps it’s to please others or because we think it’s easier to do the task ourselves. Yet, it only results in frustration.

In Michael Bungay-Stanier’s book, “The Coaching Habit,” he poses a thought-provoking question: “If you say yes to this, what do you say no to?” While intended for coaching, it applies just as much to your daily work life.

When you say no to a colleague, team member, or boss, what are you actually saying yes to? Consider it. It could be your goals, your career, your status, your time management, or your wellbeing.

Remember, saying no is about protecting your time, energy, and overall well-being. By prioritising wisely, you create room for meaningful work and personal growth.

So, the next time you face a request or task, ask yourself: “If I say yes to this, what am I saying no to?” It’s time to embrace what aligns with your goals and values, and say yes to what truly matters.
