Background
Finally I have updated my website with some principles that I like and which represent how I see leadership. I realised after a client feedback this morning, that I still hadn’t put them up. So here’s a longer version (compared to the homepage).
Originally I came across the name True North in topics related to boat navigation. Navigational charts and instruments often use True North as a reference point because it provides a fixed reference for direction that is not affected by local magnetic variations. And I thought of the demanding world of leadership like a boat being in a stormy sea and at times you need a True North to focus on.
The Three Principles
I have chosen the True North Leadership principles as the backbone for my leadership coaching business. I believe that these three principles are essential for building successful and sustainable leadership practices.
Moral integrity and ethics are the foundation of any successful business or organisation. As a leader, it is important to do what is right and just, even in the face of adversity or temptation. By upholding these ethical standards, leaders can create a culture of trust and respect.
Authenticity and authentic leadership are also crucial for building successful leadership practices. To lead effectively, be true to yourself and lead from a place of sincerity and transparency. By doing so, you can build genuine relationships with their teams. In return this creates trust and openness. It can be misleading to think you need to change your own unique approach.
Finally, alignment with purpose and goals is critical for driving success. By setting clear goals and objectives, leaders can create a sense of focus and direction for their teams. By ensuring that their actions and decisions are consistent with these goals, you drive success and create a sense of fulfilment for themselves and their teams.
I don’t know what your goal is for your team, department or your business. But I genuinely believe that when we work in an environment of trust, there will be motivation, and results will follow. I would like to say it’s not rocket science. But there are some points you can adhere to as a leader or executive.
