Transforming work overload

Are you constantly swimming against a tide of work? Facing never-ending deadlines and feeling trapped? Time to transform your workload?

I see and hear from too many people in the corporate world, who are burdened with work overload. This is a dangerous development in my opinion. But there are things you can do about it.

What if you came to the realisation that work never ends and your time is limited. I mean really limited. You can be done with one thing, the next thing awaits your attention. You’re caught up in meetings, emails, questions. So let’s be honest, there is very little time to be actually productive (as in working on your projects and bringing them to life).

A typical situation is where you work on a project. One, that you like and that would help business move to the next level. But instead of making progress, you are called into way too many meetings, you are hindered by internal politics or complicated approval processes. And any of your ideas to improve the situation falls on death ears.

How does that make you feel? I assume stressed is one of the emotions, but it can also be very frustrating. On top of these negative emotions these situations can even leave you wondering whether you’re in the wrong job, because all you’re trying to do is play catch up.

From various conversations with clients, I understand that oftentimes the real struggle is feeling of being externally controlled. A feeling of neither having any agency nor choice, really. I understand how this feels, I’ve been there myself many times.

Work never ends

But back to my question. Once you realise that your time is limited and that work never ends, opportunities come along.

That’s the point you need to start working on. Stress and frustration often build up when there’s a perceived lack of control. But in fact, you very much have a choice.

So what are the areas you can actually influence? How much of a say can you have in your workday? Do you need to be in all these meetings? Does your boss actually realise how much is on your plate or would an open conversation be eye-opening? What is your responsibility according to your job profile? How much guidance do you need? Is the problem maybe one of resources? Or maybe a lack of vision and overall goals?

Ask yourself this: What would your ideal workday look like? And be honest with yourself. How can you turn this into a long term vision rather than a momentary wish?

Imagine a workday, where you feel accomplished. A workday that you look forward to. And one that gives you satisfaction and pride to be part of.

This is why coaching can be helpful in such a situation. It won’t necessarily show you how to get all that work done (because, let’s be honest, there is more work around the corner). But it helps see triggers of stress and helps you find solutions to remediate them. Regardless of what they are.

Coaching can help you reflect on your weaknesses but also uncover strengths, some you may not have thought of. Coaching is also a great way to help you change perspectives. What is causing your boss to act the way they are? How is the situation impacting your colleagues? What about your team?

You will recognise resilience

Over time coaching can help you build resilience and help you recognise your own resources. With this you can significantly improve your work satisfaction and your ability to feel joy at work. Much needed if you’re planning on advancing your career. And even if not, we spend way too much time at work to not enjoy it.

Oftentimes regaining a sense of agency is already a big relieve to my clients. And this can be discovered through open, honest and transparent coaching conversations.

If you’re looking for some relieve in this regards, don’t hesitate. Don’t wait for a wonder to happen, don’t wait for things to change by itself, it won’t happen. You need to take control of the situation, be in charge and make a change happen.

Through coaching, you’ll find practical strategies to manage your workload, improve communication, and enhance your overall job satisfaction.

I can show you how to get there. I bring not only expertise but personal understanding to our sessions. Reach out, I can’t wait to hear from you.
