Too little time

In my coaching sessions clients often complain about the lack of time. There is too much to do, too little time.

It’s all very frustrating.

The very first step – and this is always surprising – is to figure out what they use their time for.

I know this sounds like a given, almost a silly tip. But the truth is, many people don’t realise what they use their time for.

If, for a whole week, you manage to note down everything you’re doing (e.g., in your calendar) it will reveal real opportunities to save time. i.e. many managers don’t realise how much time they spend in meetings, or how much time is used for making decisions. Do you have any idea how many hours you spend on your mobile phone?

Imagine you figure out that in week you spend 20 hours in meetings. It sounds like a lot, but the actual number could be even higher. That’s 4 meetings a day.

Solutions

Ask yourself who in your team could attend on your behalf, whether meetings could be shortened to 30 minutes and if they are needed in first place.

Cut 50% of those meetings and you’re given 10 hours back to use for things that truly move the needle at work.

Maybe that also gives you 5 hours extra to spend with your team. That’s where the value lies.

As a coach it’s not up to me to give these tips during session. It’s up to my clients to decide what’s effective for their career and what’s not.

But I do help my clients get to this recognition and most importantly, I help them make the shift to a healthier schedule, one that allow for a thriving career abut also gives them some time to breathe back.
