Summary
Change is a constant in all our lives. And sometimes it's important to be kind to yourself and to recognise you are already giving your best at work.
A hard truth in the corporate world is that there is always change. Losing your job can be an emotional rollercoaster.
I remember many years ago in a company I worked for, one of our most senior colleagues was about to retire. He had been with the company for 45 years. And in his farewell speech he said, “There is no reason to ever change employers as there are so many opportunities here”.
Today’s reality is that even loyalty and good performance don’t necessarily mean that your role is secure. There is always change happening.
The only constant (and I’ve always hated that phrase) is change. Companies can disappear, be bought by a competitor. Or owners can decide to close down, your boss can leave, the economy can take a downturn, politics can change, etc.
All factors that can affect your job security. And all factors that contribute to your wellbeing and performance (regardless of rank).
I’m writing this because many of my clients have very high expectations of themselves. And I think it’s time people started to see themselves as people again, and recognise that there are limits to productivity, but also limits to resilience.
There’s a lot to take in these days in the corporate world. Be kind to yourself.
