The barrenness of a busy life

Last Sunday I finally sat down and watched “Leaving the world behind”. I had read the book years ago and couldn’t wait to watch it.

This time, I set myself a challenge: to watch the movie without my mobile phone within arm’s reach. I tend to have no clue about what’s happening in any movie or series as I don’t focus on them fully.

I succeeded and watched the movie without checking what some stranger was cooking somewhere on this planet, without seeing the latest reel of someone’s new puppy, without the rabbit hole of doom scrolling.

The fact that we’re constantly distracted and busy, deprives us of so many important moments. It’s not about missing out a movie. It’s about real conversations, moments of solitude, and even the creative potential of boredom. Things that contribute to our happiness.

Socrates famously warned “Beware of the barrenness of a busy life”.

Yet, we’re busy living our busy lives.

In my coaching practice I help my clients understand the roots of their own busyness. It’s fascinating how often underlying issues surface—limiting beliefs, past experiences, and more.

The reasons can be very surprising, but they’re always enlightening. And that’s when a meaningful change can happen.
