Presence in every moment

A few years ago I travelled to a Finnish town north of the Arctic Circle. I had always wanted to see the Northern Lights and this was my best chance to do so. Little did I think about presence in every moment at that point.

You’ve probably seen photos of the northern lights, but let me tell you, they’re nothing like the real thing.

I had my camera with me and was convinced that I could get some nice shots of them. What I didn’t realise at the time was that you needed a tripod, a lot of patience and a good understanding of night photography to get a good picture.

The aurora can be weak, depending on the sun’s activity, and it’s constantly moving… it’s something surreal to watch.

Looking back, I realised something important. I didn’t need a camera to take pictures that I could later admire from a distance.

On the contrary.

I could just be there and soak up the moment, enjoy it as it was and be in awe of the wonderful, beautiful Northern Lights…

Presence in every moment seems to be a lost art. But the moment is all we ever get and there’s so much power in being able to see that.
