Today’s work environment is demanding a lot. Deliverables, time pressure, colleagues, bosses. The constant phone calls, messenger notifications.
If you feel like you want to run away, you are not alone.
Many employees report feeling overwhelmed by the demands of their jobs. It is crucial to recognize this and to work on strategies to manage these challenges.
What you can do about work overload
-
Prioritize and delegate: Do you understand which tasks are important? Which ones are urgent? One of your tasks is to delegate and not to complete everything yourself.
-
Time Management: There are various aspects in here. Divide your tasks into chunks. Ensure there is a break between meetings (do you need to be in all?). Schedule shorter meetings, schedule time you need to do focused work etc.
-
Boundaries: With this I mean the boundaries between work and life. Have you defined those and do you stick to them? Are you off on evenings and weekends? Do you give into the temptation of answering e-mails or text messages? Do you know how to say no?
-
Stress Management: Identify what works best for you. This can be meditation, going for walks, exercising, or other activities outside work. Schedule them into your calendar if it helps. What matters is consistency. Taking care of physical and mental well-being is vital.
-
Seek support: You will be surprised to find you’re not the only one who suffers. But nothing will change if you don’t speak up. Talk to your manager or peers. Or find outside support via coaching.
These strategies can help you with stress at work. But first you need to be willing to make a change. Self-reflection is crucial. And it requires a shift of mindset. Ask yourself what it is that you prioritise in your life?
