Stop chasing happiness

Ever thought that you should stop chasing happiness, a better career, more money, fewer problems. You’ve been there, gazing towards that distant horizon, believing that once you reach it, then you’ll finally be happy.

But it’s like sailing around the world. That horizon will always be there, just out of reach, no matter how far you sail. You achieve one goal, only to set your sights on another, constantly chasing a future that never quite arrives.

This relentless pursuit of future happiness can be exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling. It can lead to a chronic sense of dissatisfaction, a feeling that you’re never quite “enough,” never quite “there.” You sacrifice the present moment for a future that always seems just beyond your grasp.

The Power of Looking Inward

But what if the happiness you’re seeking isn’t “out there” on the horizon? What if it’s not something you need to achieve or acquire, but something you can discover within yourself, right here, right now?

Instead of constantly looking outward, what if you took a moment to look inward? What if you explored the vast landscape of your own mind and heart? What if you paid attention to the present moment, to the richness and fullness of your current experience?

This inward journey might involve:

  • Becoming aware of your thoughts: Noticing the stories you tell yourself, the judgments you make, the fears and anxieties that cloud your mind.
  • Challenging your assumptions: Questioning the beliefs that keep you trapped in the pursuit of future happiness, the beliefs that tell you you’re not good enough, not successful enough, not worthy of happiness in this moment.
  • Connecting with your body: Paying attention to your physical sensations, your breath, your posture, your energy levels. Your body is always present, always grounded in the now.
  • Engaging your senses: Noticing the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures around you. The present moment is a symphony of sensations, waiting to be experienced.

The Joy of the Present Moment

When you truly connect with the present moment, you often discover a sense of peace, joy, and contentment that you’ve been seeking elsewhere. You realise that happiness is not something you need to chase; it’s something you can cultivate within yourself, right here, right now.

This doesn’t mean that you should stop setting goals or striving for a better future. But it does mean that you can find fulfillment and joy in the journey itself, in the everyday moments that make up your life.

From Chasing to Embracing

So, what if you stopped chasing that elusive horizon of happiness and instead embraced the present moment? What if you allowed yourself to experience the fullness of this very moment, without judgment, without striving, without the need to change anything?

What if you recognized that the happiness you seek is already within you, waiting to be discovered?

This shift in perspective can be transformative. It can lead to:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: When you’re not constantly chasing the future, you naturally feel less stressed and anxious.
  • Increased gratitude and appreciation: When you focus on the present moment, you become more aware of the good things in your life and develop a deeper sense of gratitude.
  • Enhanced creativity and innovation: When you’re present, you’re more open to new ideas and possibilities, which can lead to greater creativity and innovation.
  • Deeper connections: When you’re present with others, you can connect with them on a more authentic and meaningful level.
  • Greater fulfillment and purpose: When you’re present in your work and your life, you’re more likely to find meaning and purpose in what you do.
