I often work with clients who feel worn out and under immense stress. I like to ask them how their immediate work environment deals with that situation. What kind of support system is in place to ensure employees remain healthy, and those who don’t can speak out?
After all, a healthy employee can deliver more than someone at the brink of good health, no?
Fear of repercussions
So it surprises me to hear, that sometimes people are afraid to say that their health is affected. That they’re not well or they don’t know how to deal with all the pressure.
Speaking up at work can be challenging. Especially when there are concerns about showing vulnerability, particularly in leadership positions. Additionally, there is often a fear that speaking up may lead to negative consequences, all the way to a job loss.
These beliefs contribute to a culture of silence in the workplace. And so employees hesitate to voice their opinions or concerns.
As a coach, it is not up to me to decide how likely those reactions are. It is not up to me to decide the best way forward for my clients. But from a personal point of view, I care about my clients and also their health. I can work with my clients to see where their priorities lie regarding health. I can help prepare for a tough conversation with their line manager. I can also work on personal beliefs that are limiting their career or wellbeing.
Understanding the negative impact of constant stress and realizing that it can be changed are crucial first steps. Moreover, gaining clarity on values and life priorities can further contribute to a healthier life and mindset.
Don’t know how to do this? I would be happy to support.
