Ever feel like life is somewhere between racing or thriving? Like you’re constantly running at full speed but never quite catching up? Like you’re stuck in the fast lane, with the scenery whizzing by in a dizzying rush?
Several years ago, I was in Abu Dhabi on a business trip, and I had the chance to witness the Formula 1 training sessions. The speed, the precision, the intensity of those drivers pushing their cars to the limit was exhilarating. It was a thrilling spectacle, a testament to human skill and determination.
At the time, I was in one of the most exciting roles of my career. I was working on international projects, travelling regularly, collaborating with incredible people. and making a real impact in the business world. It was a time of rapid growth, constant learning, and exhilarating challenges.
But it was also a time of intense pressure, long hours, and relentless deadlines. I was sleep-deprived. I was juggling multiple projects and responsibilities. And constantly pushing myself to perform at my best. It was rewarding, yes, but also incredibly exhausting.
Looking back, I realize that I was caught up in the race. Just like those F1 drivers. I was so focused on reaching the next milestone, achieving the next goal, that I often forgot to pause, to breathe, and to appreciate the journey itself.
The Illusion of the Finish Line
The problem with this “always-on” mentality is that there is no finish line. There will always be another project, another deadline, another challenge. If we’re constantly striving for the next achievement, we’ll never truly arrive. We’ll always be chasing that elusive feeling of completion, of having “made it.”
But the truth is, there is no “making it.” Life is a journey, not a destination. And the real joy, the real fulfillment, lies in embracing the journey itself, in savouring the present moment, and in appreciating the small victories along the way.
The Importance of Breaks and Balance
If I could go back and do it all again, there are a few things I would do differently:
- Prioritize breaks: I would prioritize taking breaks, not just the quick 15-minute coffee break, but proper breaks that allow for true rest and rejuvenation. This might involve spending weekends in nature, disconnecting from technology, or simply scheduling time for “doing nothing.”
- Accept limitations: I would recognize that work never truly ends, and that it’s impossible to get everything done. I would learn to prioritize effectively, delegate tasks, and set realistic expectations for myself and my team.
- Seek support: I would reach out for support from a coach, mentor, or trusted colleague. Having someone to talk to, to bounce ideas off of, and to provide guidance and encouragement can make a world of difference.
The Power of Choice
It’s easy to get caught up in the corporate whirlwind, to feel like you’re constantly being swept along by the current. But the truth is, you have a choice. You can choose to prioritize your well-being, to set boundaries, and to create a more balanced and fulfilling life.
This doesn’t mean sacrificing your ambition or your drive for success. It simply means recognizing that true success encompasses more than just professional achievements. It’s about finding joy and meaning in your work, nurturing your relationships, and taking care of your physical and mental health.
The F1 Analogy
Think about those F1 drivers. They have a team of engineers, mechanics, and support staff dedicated to their success. They understand that they can’t achieve their goals alone. And they also rely on others for guidance, support, and expertise.
So, what’s stopping you from doing the same? What’s preventing you from building your own support system, from seeking out a coach or mentor who can help you navigate the challenges of leadership and create a more fulfilling and impactful career?
