More talking, more waiting?

Do you ever feel like life is a constant rush, a never-ending race to get to the next thing? We hurry through our days, our work, and even our conversations. But what if the key to a more fulfilling and productive life lies in the art of waiting?

As the brilliant Fran Lebowitz once said, “The opposite of talking is not listening, it’s waiting.” This simple yet profound statement reveals a truth we often overlook: true communication requires patience.

Think about your typical conversation. How often do you find yourself eager to jump in, to make your point, offer advice, or share your own experience? It’s easy to get caught up in the momentum and forget the power of simply waiting.

Recognise the urge to answer

But when we resist the urge to rush and instead give ourselves permission to wait, something magical happens. We create space for deeper listening, greater understanding. And more meaningful connections. We allow the other person to feel truly heard. And in turn, we open ourselves up to new perspectives and ideas.

This practice of patient waiting extends far beyond our conversations. It’s about cultivating a mindful approach to life, resisting the urge to constantly react and instead embracing the power of the pause.

Here are a few simple ways to cultivate more patience in your daily life:

  • Practice active listening: Focus on the speaker, resist distractions, and ask clarifying questions.
  • Embrace silence: Don’t be afraid of pauses in conversation. They can be powerful moments for reflection and connection.
  • Schedule “waiting time”: Set aside time each day to disconnect from technology and simply be present with your thoughts and surroundings.
  • Start small: Begin with just 5 minutes a day of dedicated “waiting” time and gradually increase it as you become more comfortable.

By embracing the art of waiting, we can transform our communication, deepen our relationships, and cultivate a greater sense of calm and focus in our lives. So, ditch the phone, embrace the pause, and discover the power of patience.
