Leadership sometimes gets mistaken for hierarchy, leading to the misconception that authority is solely a result of one’s position in a hierarchical structure.
However, this is not the case. Consider the effectiveness of voluntary organisations, i.e. in a university setting or within communities. These groups do not work or function with rigid hierarchies, but on collaborative leadership.
Here, authority is earned through respect, expertise, and the ability to inspire and motivate. Regardless of formal titles or ranks, which often don’t exist. Motivating others in such settings relies on understanding individual strengths but also understanding what the common goal is.
Leadership needs to be simple, in fact, not a complicated structure that prevents you from giving your best.
It involves creating an environment where each member feels valued and empowered to contribute. This approach creates a sense of belonging and commitment, driving the group towards collective success. This further proves that true leadership is about influence and guidance, inspiration and motivation.
