Grow business with Disney

You heard it right. You can grow business with Disney. It also works as a coaching method, and is one that I find particularly effective. When implemented , it can yield significant advantages and transform your approach to problem-solving.

The Disney method was developed in 1994 as a means to enhance creative thinking within the company. Its success and widespread adoption have solidified its reputation as a powerful technique for innovation and new possibilities.

So, how does the Disney method work, and what do you need to get started?

Whether you’re using this method as a coach or as a leader with a team, the process remains the same. The key is to create an environment that focused on exploration of ideas. One that stimulates fresh perspectives but leaves room for critical thinking. For team settings, allocate separate breakout rooms or choose distinct corners within a larger space. If working , consider using different chairs or changing positions throughout the exercise. This helps with imagining the transition between roles.

The essential steps of the Disney method

Step one: Dreamer

In the Dreamer phase, allow your imagination to roam . Embrace a mindset of limitless possibilities and let your creativity flow uninhibited. Explore uncharted territories and venture beyond the boundaries of conventional thinking. This stage is about unleashing your inner visionary and envisioning what could be.

Step two: Realist

Transitioning into the Realist role, you bring pragmatism and practicality to the forefront. Check the feasibility of your ideas, considering resources, constraints, and potential challenges. Channel your analytical mindset to assess how your dreams can be grounded in reality. By exploring the practical aspects, you can refine your ideas and bring them closer to implementation.

Step three: Critic

Now, assume the Critic perspective. It’s time to analyse and test your ideas. Adopt a discerning eye to identify potential flaws, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Seek constructive criticism and feedback. This can provide valuable insights that shape your concepts into more robust and refined solutions.

How will you succeed?

In order to succeed, you either need to facilitate this as a workshop yourself, or you can have an external person (a coach) do this as a team building exercise together with you. That person can always get the participants out of that respective role and question what has happened and what has come up in each part. This helps with reflection and finding an end solution.

Each role within the Disney method stands for a unique viewpoint. And this creates a comprehensive approach to problem-solving. By embracing this method, you tap into the power of diverse thinking. A culture of innovation is about to take shape. It encourages you to explore uncharted territories. It will challenge assumptions, and push beyond your comfort zone. And the same goes for your team.

Keep in mind that personal criticism of ideas should be avoided. In the Dreamer phase, it’s crucial to encourage open exploration where any idea or suggestion can rasied. It’s not about evaluating ideas as good or bad at this stage but rather letting the mind wander and encourage creativity. Remember, ideas often lead to new ideas, regardless of their initial quality.

If you do this with a team, you will also create a bigger sense of team, when you go through this process. Each team member will see and realise how they contribute to the bigger goal. That can be very rewarding to them and also to you.

So, give it a try and witness the transformative impact it can have on your work. As always, I’m here to support you on your journey and help you leverage the Disney method to drive your success.
