As we are about to end this year, it’s natural to look ahead with hope and aspirations for a happier or even better work in 2024. But here’s a reality check: Hoping alone won’t bring any change.
From Hope to Action
In leadership coaching, there’s a common understanding: True change is a product of deliberate action and introspection. The first step towards this transformation? Identifying what needs to change. This sounds straightforward, yet it’s often where many stumble.
Do you know what’s holding you back? It’s essential to acknowledge that the primary obstacle is often not the lack of ideas but the reluctance to act.
That is crucial! If you feel like this, a first step is to admit it to yourself. There’s nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, it’s human to be reluctant to act.
Procrastination, disguised as being “too busy,” or uncertainty, masked as “I don’t know what I want,” are barriers that prevent many from advancing in their careers and having a better life. Maybe that’s true for you, too?
In coaching, we emphasise the importance of recognising and confronting one’s personal obstacles. Dismantling these barriers, one step at a time, is pivotal in leadership development and personal growth.
Envisioning where you want to be is not just a daydream; it’s an exercise that can open up a world of possibilities. Because you’re no longer stuck in problem-thinking.

Consider the concept of change in the context of leadership coaching. Effective leaders are those who can not only adapt to change but also drive it. They are visionaries who can identify areas of improvement. And not just in themselves but also in their teams and organisations. This skill is not innate; it’s developed through continuous self-reflection and professional coaching.
The role of coaching in change
The role of coaching in facilitating change cannot be overstated. A coach is like a mirror, reflecting your strengths and areas for growth. A coach can challenge your assumptions, and help you get to your full potential.
But how do you start this process of change? It begins with self-awareness. Take time to reflect on the past year – what were your successes and challenges? What lessons did you learn, and what could you have done differently? This reflection is the basis that will help you create a better 2024.
Next, consider setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. These goals should align with your broader vision for your career and life. Remember, change doesn’t have to be monumental. Really not. Small, consistent steps often lead to significant transformations.
Another crucial aspect of inducing change is building a support system. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and a coach who can provide guidance, feedback, and encouragement. Remember, asking for help is not a sign of weakness. The insights and experiences of others can be invaluable.
Change requires patience, perseverance, and resilience. There will be setbacks and challenges, but these are opportunities for learning and growth.
So, as we look forward to 2024, I pose this question to you: What is one thing you are determined to change in the coming year?
The future is yours to shape. Get in touch if you agree.
