Forget productivity hacks

Feel like you can’t get everything done at work? Forget productivity hacks. If you’re experiencing this, you’re not alone. Many leaders face overwhelming workloads that leave them feeling stretched thin and ineffective. It’s a common misconception that the solution lies in productivity hacks.

These quick fixes often reinforce the belief that your current efforts are not enough. Which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and the constant pressure to do more.

But what if you’re already doing more than enough? What if the key to success lies not in hacking productivity? But in a deeper understanding of your own capabilities and priorities?

In my recent discussions with leaders seeking relief from their overwhelming workloads, one recurring theme stands out: the belief that somewhere, somehow, there’s a solution to their stress. Whether it’s a new tool, technique, or strategy, many leaders are searching for that elusive remedy to alleviate their burdens.

That elusive positive outcome

The pursuit of more often leads to a vicious cycle of increased stress and diminished effectiveness. As Lewis Carroll famously wrote, “it’s always jam tomorrow or yesterday, but never jam today.” And the promise of a better future remains elusive, leaving leaders feeling trapped in a perpetual cycle of stress and striving.

But what if there’s another way? What if the relief you seek is not some distant goal, but an achievable reality in the present moment? What if you could reclaim your sense of balance and control right now? Without waiting for some future solution to materialise?

These are the questions we must ask ourselves as leaders. By challenging the assumption that more is always better and embracing the possibility of finding relief in the here and now, we can begin to shift our mindset and approach to work. Instead of constantly striving for some elusive ideal of productivity, we can focus on what truly matters. Our well-being, our effectiveness, and our ability to lead with clarity and purpose.

So, what would be different if you stopped chasing after jam tomorrow and started embracing the possibilities of jam today? It’s time to find out.

Key questions to consider:

Question 1: How can I effectively manage my workload without resorting to productivity hacks?

Answer 1: By acknowledging that productivity hacks often perpetuate the belief that our current efforts are inadequate, we can explore alternative approaches to workload management. This might involve prioritising tasks. Or setting realistic expectations, and delegating responsibilities where possible.

Question 2: What strategies can I implement to address feelings of overwhelm and inadequacy in the workplace?

Answer 2: It’s essential to recognize that feelings of overwhelm and inadequacy are common among busy leaders. Instead of seeking external solutions, we can start by reframing our mindset and focusing on self-compassion. This involves acknowledging our efforts, setting boundaries, and seeking support from colleagues or mentors.

Question 3: How can I cultivate a healthier work-life balance and prioritize my well-being as a busy leader?

Answer 3: Prioritising well-being as a busy leader requires a conscious effort to establish boundaries and carve out time for self-care. This might involve scheduling regular breaks. Also practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques, and setting realistic expectations for ourselves. Additionally, seeking support from peers or seeking professional guidance through coaching or therapy. Both can be beneficial in achieving a healthier work-life balance.
