Finding control by letting go

Perhaps the easiest way to find a sense of control is to let go of the need for it. Sounds like a contradiction? It is, in a way. Because perhaps control itself is a contradiction. At any moment, things can change, priorities can shift and unexpected challenges can arise. What if, instead of fighting this constant state of flux, you chose to embrace uncertainty?

The illusion of control in leadership

In leadership, we’re often taught to strive for control. We create detailed plans, set ambitious goals and work tirelessly to ensure that everything goes according to plan. But the reality is that the world is unpredictable. Markets fluctuate, competitors emerge and unexpected events can disrupt even the best-laid plans.

Trying to control every aspect of your work, your team and your organisation is not only exhausting but ultimately futile. It’s like trying to hold water in your hands – the tighter you grip, the more slips through your fingers.

Embracing uncertainty is key in leadership

So what’s the alternative? It’s embracing uncertainty. It’s recognising that you can’t control everything, and that’s OK. In fact, it can be a source of strength.

When you realise that not everything can (or needs to) be controlled, you free yourself to focus on what really matters:

  • Your vision: Instead of getting bogged down in the details, you can focus on the bigger picture and lead your team towards a common goal.
  • Your team: You can empower your team to take ownership, make decisions and contribute their unique talents.
  • Your own wellbeing: You can reduce stress, improve focus and create a more sustainable approach to leadership.
  • The power of pausing

Sometimes all you need is a moment to stop and reflect on what you’re doing. To ask yourself

  • Am I trying to control things that are beyond my control?
  • Where do I focus my energy?
  • What is really important in this moment?

This simple act of pausing can be incredibly powerful. It allows you to step back from the chaos, gain perspective and make more conscious choices. But as simple as it sounds, it can also be the hardest thing to do. In our fast-paced, always-on world, taking a moment to simply be can feel like a radical act.

Letting go of the need for control doesn’t mean relinquishing responsibility. It means shifting your focus from micromanagement to strategic leadership, from fear-based reactions to mindful responses. It’s about finding your centre in the midst of uncertainty and leading with greater clarity, confidence and compassion.
