What if you don’t know how to lead?

By reading ‘what if you don’t know how to lead’, you should realise that the title is not relevant to you. It’s a ‘what if‘ question. You can never be sure of what might happen.

And that’s the point. ‘What if’ takes your mind away from the present moment. It distracts you from the here and now. This very moment. The only thing you truly possess.

Leadership comes with many demands. There are all kinds of qualities you should have: Reliable, inspirational, directive, assertive, resilient, strong, clear and decisive, to name a few. That’s a lot of words and a lot of pressure.

You may find yourself wondering what kind of person you should be. And if you are really up to the task.

These are the kinds of doubts that creep in just before you start a new leadership position. Or the kinds of thoughts that pop up during a meeting with peers. You start to believe that everyone else has everything under control and is so good at it.

The philosophy I work with my clients according to is that ‘you are enough’. The way you are is a unique expression of life — or the universe, if you prefer — and therefore you don’t need to improve or change yourself.

This is an essential realisation for leadership. If you see yourself as ‘almost’ good enough, or as any of the other things mentioned above, you simply won’t be the leader you can truly be.

As a leader, are there still things you can learn and apply? Absolutely. The difference lies in doing so from a place of wholeness rather than a place of deficit.

But if the way you lead (the doing) is affected by doubt about yourself (being), it will show.
