Could self-awareness be a trap?
Leaders are often told to focus on self-awareness. But what if this conventional wisdom is a trap?
Consider the many responsibilities you face as a leader. You’re expected to be aware of how you come across, your body language, your emotional intelligence, your communication style, your strengths, your weaknesses and your impact on others. This influx of external expectations and pressures can be overwhelming.
The constant focus on ‘who you should be’ is exhausting and distracts you from the work that really matters. True leadership isn’t about constant self-analysis. It’s about developing the ability to see beyond the surface, to recognise the deeper dynamics at play.
This is where recognition and focused awareness come in. It’s about shifting from a state of constant evaluation to a state of present-moment awareness.
Cultivating focused awareness allows you to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgement, leading to greater clarity, improved decision-making and enhanced emotional intelligence. It’s not about ignoring your emotions; it’s about understanding that they come and go like clouds in the sky.
True leadership goes beyond external validation. It’s about finding the inner calm and clarity that enables you to navigate complexity with grace and effectiveness.
Instead of falling into the trap of endless self-analysis, focus on cultivating recognition and awareness.
What or where is that awareness, you wonder? Start with that space between your thoughts. What is there between what you think?
