Can’t see the forest for the trees

“So obvious! Why didn’t I think of this before?”

It’s a common reaction I hear from my coaching clients, often accompanied by a chuckle of surprise or a shake of the head. And I can relate. I remember my own experiences as a coachee, wondering why I was paying someone to help me arrive at seemingly obvious answers.

But here’s the thing: coaching isn’t about finding the “right” answers or providing solutions that should have been apparent all along. It’s about something much deeper, something more transformative.

The Problem with Problem-Solving

When we’re stuck in a problem, when we’re grappling with a challenge, our perspective often narrows. We become fixated on the problem itself, on the obstacles, on the limitations. We get caught up in our own thoughts, our assumptions, and our habitual ways of seeing the world.

This is where our own minds can become our biggest obstacle. We go around in circles, replaying the same thoughts, rehashing the same arguments, and failing to see the situation with fresh eyes. We get lost in the forest and can’t see the trees, as the saying goes.

The Power of Perspective

This is where coaching comes in. A skilled coach can help you to:

  • Step back from the problem: Create distance from the immediate challenge and gain a broader perspective.
  • Challenge your assumptions: Question your beliefs and explore alternative viewpoints.
  • Identify blind spots: Uncover hidden patterns and biases that might be influencing your decisions and actions.
  • Generate new possibilities: Open up new ways of thinking and generate creative solutions that you might not have considered before.
  • Tap into your inner wisdom: Connect with your intuition and access the knowledge and resources that already exist within you.

The “Aha!” Moment

It’s often in those moments of insight, those “aha!” moments, that the true value of coaching becomes apparent. Suddenly, the solution that seemed so elusive becomes clear. The path forward that was hidden in the fog of your thoughts emerges into focus.

These moments of clarity are not always about groundbreaking revelations or complex solutions. Sometimes, they’re about recognizing the simple, the obvious, the things that were right in front of you all along, but that you couldn’t see because you were too close to the problem.

The Value of a Thinking Partner

Coaching is not about having someone else solve your problems for you. It’s about having a thinking partner, someone who can help you to see things differently, to challenge your assumptions, and to unlock your own potential for finding solutions and creating change.

So, if you’re struggling with a challenge, if you feel stuck in a rut, or if you simply want to gain a fresh perspective, consider working with a coach. It might be the key to unlocking the “obvious” solutions that have been eluding you and creating a more fulfilling and successful path forward.
