Become a better listener

Did you know that there is a way to enhance your charisma and give others the recognition and attention they deserve? The key to achieving this is by becoming a better listener. Listening is an essential skill for leaders, yet many of us struggle to listen effectively.

Listening Means More than Just Hearing

When you listen to someone, you not only hear their words, but you also try to understand what they are saying. This means showing empathy and recognising that their thoughts and opinions matter.

Talking and Listening are Equally Important

Talking is often perceived as more attractive because it gives the speaker control over the conversation’s direction and outcome. However, listening is just as important as speaking- it is the key to building trust, rapport and understanding.

Assumptions can be Misleading

It’s easy to assume that you know where a conversation is going or to interrupt someone else’s thoughts with your own opinions. However, these assumptions are often misleading. We simply cannot predict what others might say next.

Keep Advice to Yourself

Even if you want to help, giving unsolicited advice can often be seen as intrusive and unwelcomed. Instead, focus on listening to the other person and offering support and encouragement.

Practice Patience and Become a Better Listener

Patience is key to better listening. Try to resist the urge to interrupt or cut a conversation short. Instead, let the person share their thoughts and take the time to truly understand what is being said. By doing so, you’ll not only become a better listener, but you’ll also build stronger relationships and gain a deeper understanding of those around you.

Whenever you’re ready to work on your listening skills, I’m happy to listen to you.
