Are you a line manager and do you take your laptop with you during 1:1s to take notes? You likely try to do one too many things. Something I encounter often in my leadership coaching sessions.
I’v had these kinds of 1:1s and they usually left me frustrated. As an employee the laptop felt like a barrier between my manager and me. Something that prevented any connection.
It was often a case of “yeah, go on, I’m listening” while typing away on the keyboard (notes? email? project slides?).
But this is not about blaming anyone, in the end it usually came down to work overload and trying to do several things at the same time.
Multitasking? I remain skeptical. Can you read that email, type your answer all while listening and understanding what the other person is telling you?
I understand the challenge to want to capture everything that is being discussed, but it can also create a disconnect.
The belief of multitasking is wrong
It’s a common belief that juggling tasks means more productivity, but often, it leads to the opposite. But – imagine the difference when there is uninterrupted time to share ideas, concerns, and aspirations.
In these moments, less truly is more. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- 1:1 meetings should be an opportunity, not just another item on your to-do list. Make them count.
- Ensuring your team feels seen and heard is crucial. That connections makes all the difference – and that difference matters if you want to reach your own goals
- Focus on doing one thing after the other. You’ll achieve way more with this
- We’re all human. A simple, genuine ‘how are you doing?’ can make a world of difference
If work overload is the issue, face it directly. No need to be defensive about this topic (we’ve all been there).
Focus on the person in front of you, give them some uninterrupted time. Improved team morale and a stronger team culture start with these one-on-one connections.
Are your 1:1s a checkbox or a connection point? Tell me about the difference it’s making for you.
