Before I started coaching, I spent many years in the financial industry. And I had many good moments, some bad ones. But one decision leads to the next.
In my 20 years in the corporate world I had many moments where I struggled with workload, pressure, or expectations.
Often these came with a perceived loss of control and feelings of stress. I never understood what I could do about the amount of work in front of me. What about all those deadlines. What about more senior people that demand answers?
It took a bad day in my last employment for me to realise I had to make a change before I’d feel overwhelmed. I vividly remember this being a Sunday when I physically felt that I was close to things getting out of hand.
So I had to do something about it. Sometimes we need something bad to happen before we make a change. That’s why I became a coach, because I want to support people before they have a burnout, before they leave their work or before they believe that nothing can be changed.
I did this: I acknowledged that work never ends. It would be impossible to finish my task list, I could never get my inbox to zero.
And that was such a relief.
I stopped stressing about wanting to finish everything and focused on what was a priority: My own wellbeing. I set myself a daily time at which I would literally drop the pen. No matter whether I was “done” with work for that day or not.
An exhausted mind can’t deliver results either.
I focused on a few key tasks (the famous 20% that give you 80% of the results) and became much happier.
I also started working with a coach. So eye-opening.
Today, I’m helping professionals that are also experiencing this. But I also see many people who are unhappy and overloaded with work but can’t see a way out – as they believe it’s not in their control or the change “starts next Monday”.
Don’t waste your precious time. Take action.
